Students Honor Indigenous Veterans with Joint Ceremony in Cranbrook
Students from Laurie Middle School and ʔaq ̓amnik ̓ Elementary School gathered at Rotary Park in Cranbrook on November 8, 2023, to hold a joint ceremony honoring National Indigenous Veterans Day and Remembrance Day. This event aimed to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by Indigenous veterans and to celebrate the rich cultural diversity within the community.
The ceremony featured a trilingual reading of “Flanders Fields,” presented in Ktunaxa, English, and French. This symbolic act underscored the importance of unity and respect among the various cultures represented in the region. The reading served as a poignant reminder of the historical sacrifices made by those who served in the military.
Maci, a student from Laurie Middle School, recited a heartfelt poem written by her great aunt, reflecting on the legacy of Indigenous veterans. This personal touch added depth to the ceremony, emphasizing the intergenerational connections that honor the contributions of Indigenous peoples to the nation’s history.
A significant highlight of the day was the presentation of a banner crafted by local artist Margaret Teneese. This banner featured photographs of local veterans, creating a visual tribute to those who have served. Students from ʔaq ̓amnik ̓ Elementary read aloud the names of the veterans displayed on the banner, ensuring their contributions were recognized and remembered.
To conclude the ceremony, students from both schools participated in laying wreaths at the Cranbrook Cenotaph. This act of remembrance served as a powerful symbol of respect and gratitude for the sacrifices made by Indigenous veterans and all service members.
The joint effort by the two schools, organized under the auspices of School District No. 5 Southeast Kootenay, highlights the importance of coming together to honor shared histories and foster community spirit. This ceremony not only commemorated the past but also encouraged students to engage with their heritage and the stories of those who paved the way for future generations.
Such initiatives play a vital role in promoting understanding and respect for Indigenous cultures within the educational system. By fostering a sense of community and shared purpose, students are taught valuable lessons about unity, respect, and the significance of remembrance.
