Sunshine Coast Faces Urgent Long-Term Care Bed Crisis

The Sunshine Coast region of British Columbia is grappling with a significant crisis in long-term care bed availability, as wait times have escalated dramatically over the past decade. Residents and caregivers report feeling increasingly frustrated as they navigate a system that seems unresponsive to their needs. The provincial Office of the Seniors Advocate published data indicating that the median wait time for long-term care beds in the Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) area reached **231 days** in July 2023. This marks a staggering **250-percent increase** since 2018. Evi Blueth shared her personal experience, stating, “I needed help two years before that, and I was asking for it.” Her partner was placed on the waitlist in 2023, with the couple facing an uphill battle to secure necessary care.

VCH acknowledges the challenges families face during the long wait for care placements. In an official statement, the health authority said, “We understand how difficult this situation can be for families and the frustration while waiting for placement of a loved one in a long-term care site.” The organization is exploring innovative solutions to increase the number of long-term care beds available, but the situation remains critical.

Growing Demand for Long-Term Care

The population demographics of the Sunshine Coast further complicate the issue. Recent census data indicates that approximately one-third of the populations in Gibsons and Sechelt are over the age of 65. As the aging population continues to grow, local leaders warn of an impending surge in demand for long-term care services. “There’s going to be a tsunami of older people needing the kind of help that I’ve needed,” Evi Blueth cautioned.

Currently, there are only **204 long-term care beds** and four hospice spaces available on the Lower Sunshine Coast, according to VCH. This shortfall means that around **40 high-need individuals** are waiting for placement, with more than **7,200 people** across British Columbia on the waitlist—a **200-percent increase** since 2016.
