Support 13 Metro Vancouver Charities on Giving Tuesday
As the consumer frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday fades, attention turns to philanthropy with the arrival of Giving Tuesday. This global movement encourages donations to non-profit organizations, shining a spotlight on the essential work being done by charities in Metro Vancouver. Here are 13 notable organizations making a significant impact in the community.
Notable Charities Making a Difference
The Greater Vancouver Food Bank (GVFB) plays a crucial role, assisting over 16,000 individuals and families each month. Operating without recurring government funding, the GVFB distributed more than five million pounds of healthy food in the past year alone, with increasing demand each year.
The Vancouver Pride Society organizes the annual Pride Parade and various events throughout the year for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Their mission is to foster pride and build community cohesion, enhancing the well-being of all participants.
The St. Paul’s Foundation raises funds for vital medical equipment, research, and community programs across St. Paul’s and other Providence Health Care facilities in British Columbia. Their annual Lights of Hope campaign, now in its 28th year, has positively impacted hundreds of thousands of patients and residents.
The Regional Animal Protection Society (RAPS) is dedicated to animal welfare, operating a no-kill shelter for hundreds of feral and abandoned cats. In 2022, RAPS opened its permanent Adoption Centre and continues to raise funds for a new Dog Sanctuary.
The Landing Youth Centre serves vulnerable youth and families in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and surrounding areas. By providing a safe environment, the centre facilitates social connection, meals, and access to educational and mental health programs.
Providing Support and Empowerment
The ALS Society of B.C. directly supports those living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease. The organization offers essential equipment and services to help over 500 patients maintain their dignity and independence.
Another grassroots initiative, Employ to Empower, helps individuals facing employment barriers through entrepreneurial resources. Since its inception in 2018, over 400 people have benefitted from its programs, achieving an impressive completion rate of 87%.
As the only pediatric palliative care provider in B.C. and the Yukon, Canuck Place Children’s Hospice cares for more than 900 children with life-threatening conditions. The dedicated team provides comprehensive medical care and family support, ensuring meaningful experiences during difficult times.
Coast Mental Health has been supporting individuals with mental health challenges since 1972. Through various services including housing, education, and employment opportunities, the organization seeks to improve the overall quality of life for those in need.
The BC Cancer Foundation partners with B.C. Cancer to fund groundbreaking research and innovative care solutions, including the province’s first lung cancer screening program.
The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre aims to create a safe environment for self-identifying women, providing access to shelter, meals, counseling, and advocacy services. Each year, over 1,800 women benefit from their programs.
Lastly, Dress for Success Vancouver empowers women entering the workforce by offering professional attire and training. As the first chapter established outside the U.S., the organization embraces the diversity of Vancouver, assisting women from various backgrounds.
