Surrey Gala Celebrates Frontline Workers and Their Contributions
A recent gala in Surrey, British Columbia, recognized the exceptional contributions of frontline workers in the Lower Mainland. The annual “First Responders Gala” took place at Reflections Banquet Hall on September 17, 2023, celebrating police officers, paramedics, firefighters, and healthcare professionals for their dedicated service to the community.
Hosted by the Dwivedi Foundation, the event attracted dignitaries, including senators, Members of Parliament (MPs), Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), and mayors, such as Mayor Brenda Locke. Shanjeelin Dwivedi, Vice President of the foundation, emphasized that the gala served as both a celebration of first responders and a platform to raise awareness about the impact of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on these individuals.
“It’s a privilege to honour your contributions, support your well-being, and reaffirm that you are never alone in the work you do,” Dwivedi stated, addressing the attendees.
Acknowledging Exceptional Service
The gala featured the presentation of eleven awards to individuals who demonstrated extraordinary commitment to their communities. Among the honorees was Colin Watson, Chief Constable of the Abbotsford Police, who received the Leadership and Service Award for his outstanding leadership in policing and community safety.
Chris Michel, a Primary Care Paramedic, was awarded the Above and Beyond Award for his significant contributions to community health and patient care. Meanwhile, Acting Sergeant Jacquelyn Mula of the Major Crimes Unit in New Westminster was recognized with the Empowerment Through Service Award for her advocacy and leadership focused on women in policing.
Other notable recipients included Kal Dosanjh, a Senior Detective in the Financial Crimes Unit with Vancouver Police, who earned the Community Champion Award for his impact on youth and community development. Rona Tepper from the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue was honored with the Compassion in Action Award for her commitment to mental health support for first responders.
The evening also spotlighted the achievements of Dr. Hamid Shabbir, a physician from British Columbia, who received the Distinguished Leadership in Community Health Award for his efforts to improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations.
Commitment to Well-being and Awareness
The gala drew hundreds of police officers, firefighters, and paramedics, many accompanied by family members. The Dwivedi Foundation, established in 2018, aims to support first responders and raise awareness about the challenges they face, particularly regarding PTSD.
In addition to hosting the gala, the foundation conducts public workshops on PTSD and provides scholarships to students pursuing careers as first responders. By advocating for the well-being of these individuals and their families, the foundation plays a critical role in addressing mental health issues within the community.
