Taylor Swift Fans Raise $2.3 Million for Monterey Bay Aquarium

Fans of Taylor Swift have successfully raised $2.3 million for the Monterey Bay Aquarium through a unique fundraising initiative featuring a vintage T-shirt. The campaign, launched on March 12, 2024, began as a way to express gratitude towards Swift for her support of the aquarium and to engage her dedicated fanbase, known as the “Swifties.”
Liz MacDonald, one of the key organizers, described the effort as a collective undertaking. “We were in the archives, digging through. We were contacting former aquarium staff members, all trying to find out more,” MacDonald explained. Swift’s fans also contributed to the research, showcasing a collaborative spirit that made the revival of the classic 32-year-old T-shirt possible.
The aquarium decided to honor Swift with a special fundraising twist—fans were invited to donate $65.13, a nod to Swift’s favorite number, in exchange for the T-shirt. This initiative not only helped raise funds but also encouraged small donations, with an increase in $13 contributions as fans expressed their appreciation. “That’s like a little thank-you from the Swifties,” MacDonald remarked.
The T-shirt went on sale at 9:30 a.m. on March 12, and within eight hours, the campaign had exceeded its initial goal of $1.3 million. By the following day, the total reached an impressive $2.3 million, reflecting the enthusiasm of Swift’s supporters. “I bought it at 9:50, and I’m so excited for it to come,” said fan Margaux Burnham, who actively followed the campaign on social media.
All proceeds from the fundraiser will support the aquarium’s mission and directly benefit sea otters like Ivy, Ruby, and Opal. Interestingly, Opal’s name was chosen by fans, adding a personal touch to the campaign. “We don’t know if Taylor was one of the ones who voted, but only she knows,” MacDonald noted.
The aquarium has temporarily paused orders and backorders due to overwhelming demand after raising over $2.3 million. In a social media post, they reassured supporters, stating, “Our small team is working as fast as pawsible to catch up—delivery may take a bit longer than usual due to high demand. We appreciate your patience!”
As the campaign highlights the power of fandom and community engagement, it serves as a testament to how a beloved artist can inspire goodwill and support for vital conservation efforts.
