A new charity, Guitars for Kids Thunder Bay, is set to launch in Thunder Bay, Ontario, on December 11, 2023. The organization aims to support underprivileged youth by providing access to donated and refurbished guitars, as well as free music lessons. This initiative seeks to foster musical talent and creativity among marginalized children in the community.

The concept for Guitars for Kids Thunder Bay originated from a conversation between Brooke Pilley, the charity’s president, and Dan Walsh, one of the founders of the original Guitars for Kids organization based in Waterloo. Pilley shared his experience of building a guitar for charity and was encouraged to connect with Walsh, who provided guidance and a starter pack of 25 guitars to help establish the local branch.

Pilley emphasized the transformative power of music, stating, “If you ask anyone who loves music, especially a guitarist or someone who plays any instrument, at some point in their life, it got them through some tough times.” He believes that even if a child does not become a professional musician, the opportunity to learn an instrument can make a significant impact, showing them that someone in the community cares.

Local luthier Perry Chan, owner of Monkey Guitars, has joined the initiative by repairing donated guitars. Chan noted, “Anything comes in damaged… I’ll take a look at it, or I’ll assess it, if it’s repairable.” Guitars that are beyond repair will be transformed into art projects, ensuring that nothing goes to waste. Chan has observed that most donations have been in good condition, primarily electric guitars, which tend to be more resilient than acoustics.

Curt Mill, the board secretary, highlighted the mental health benefits of musical engagement for young people. He remarked, “I see the positivity of having people learn to play music,” drawing from his experience working with underprivileged youth.

The official launch event, titled “Shred the North,” will feature a concert format with a competition among talented local guitarists. Pilley hopes to showcase the skills of around 16 guitarists from various genres and age groups, concluding with a performance by the band Brazen Bull. This event not only aims to entertain but also to inspire children to explore their musical potential.

Looking ahead, Guitars for Kids Thunder Bay plans to distribute guitars and commence lessons in early 2024. Pilley envisions expanding the program to include activities such as songwriting sessions, jam nights, and band camps by spring.

The charity’s motto, “playing it forward,” encapsulates their mission to connect those with the means and talent with the next generation of aspiring musicians. Pilley expressed hopes that the initiative will provide opportunities for creative expression and resilience during challenging times.

Currently, Guitars for Kids Thunder Bay is accepting guitar donations, which can be dropped off at Music World on Simpson Street. For those unable to deliver in person, arrangements for pickup can be made by contacting the organization directly.
