Tyler Preston Sworn in as Full-Time Firefighter in La Salle

Tyler Preston, a native of Mendota, was officially sworn in as a full-time firefighter and EMT with the La Salle Fire Department on August 29, 2023. This milestone marks a significant step in Preston’s career, reflecting his longstanding commitment to public service and emergency response.
Preston, 22, originally aspired to become a teacher, driven by his passion for helping others. His career path shifted following an incident where he witnessed someone in distress. This experience ignited his interest in emergency services, prompting him to obtain his EMT license a few years before graduation.
After joining the La Salle Fire Department as a part-time EMT approximately one year ago, Preston’s dedication and performance became evident. Fire Chief Jerry Janick noted that Preston’s prior experience with the department played a crucial role in his hiring as a full-time firefighter. He successfully passed all required written tests, background checks, and medical and physical examinations.
Chief Janick expressed confidence in Preston’s potential, stating, “We knew his work ethic, we knew him as a person, and we knew he was very interested in continuing his career.”
Preston is set to begin an eight-week firefighter academy, starting on September 4, 2023, with plans to return on October 31, 2023. He expressed enthusiasm about the training, saying, “I’m looking forward to learning all the skills that I don’t even know I need to know yet.” His previous medical experience as an EMT will serve as a foundation for the new skills he will acquire.
Looking ahead, Preston aims to build trust within the community he serves. “I feel like I have a very big heart,” he remarked. “It doesn’t matter if it’s the smallest call for somebody or the biggest one. I’ve come ready and happy to help.” His commitment to service and eagerness to learn position him as a dedicated member of the La Salle Fire Department, ready to respond to the needs of the community.
