Vancouver Island Seniors Unite Through Facebook Group Connections

A Facebook group initiated by Trish Westeveld has transformed into a vibrant community for seniors on Vancouver Island, fostering connections among more than 3,000 members in just seven months. The group, named Vancouver Island Senior Ladies, has become a space where women can engage in activities, share experiences, and build meaningful relationships.

Westeveld’s journey began with a personal quest for connection. “I looked and looked and couldn’t find what I was looking for, and now I’ve found what I was looking for – and it seems like it’s what everyone else was looking for as well,” she stated, reflecting on the group’s rapid growth. The community has become a source of positivity and support, as members come together to form friendships that extend beyond the digital realm.

Creating a Safe Space for Women

To ensure a welcoming environment, Westeveld personally vets all new members, emphasizing inclusivity and safety. Notably, the group is exclusively for women, a stipulation that has attracted interest from men who wish to participate. Westeveld explained, “Definitely no men. We don’t want that, though we keep getting them applying, so I’m not sure if they just want to hop in on the fun.”

The group encompasses women from various towns and cities across Vancouver Island, enabling them to organize local events. Activities include walking trips, shared meals, book clubs, and invitations to cultural events such as concerts and art shows.

Building Bonds Through Shared Experiences

The sense of connection within the group has been profound for many members. Rosie Tyskerud shared her excitement after attending her first group walk, stating, “I signed up and I went the next day for the first walk and I came home and I phoned my husband about it and my kids, and everybody was so excited that I found something.”

Another member, Judy Kauwell, recalled a moving encounter from her initial outing: “My first time out I met a girl who had cancer and I was just going through the process of finding out if I had it myself, so we connected really strongly on our very first visit out.” Such stories highlight the emotional and supportive network that the group has cultivated.

As the community continues to expand, Westeveld remains optimistic about its future. “I hope to have this grow and be more. The sky is the limit to where I think I can go with this,” she expressed. The enthusiasm and commitment of the members suggest that the Vancouver Island Senior Ladies will continue to thrive, offering a lifeline of connection and camaraderie for seniors on the island.
