Victoria Native Friendship Centre Expands Shelter Capacity to 50

The Victoria Native Friendship Centre has successfully expanded its shelter capacity by adding 25 temporary spaces at its facility in Saanich, British Columbia. This increase brings the total number of available shelter spaces to 50, responding to the growing demand for support services in the region.
This initiative comes as part of the Centre’s ongoing efforts to address homelessness and provide essential services to Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals alike. With winter approaching, the need for adequate shelter has become even more pressing, prompting the Centre to take swift action.
Chief Executive Officer of the Victoria Native Friendship Centre, Katrina D’Ath, emphasized the importance of this expansion. “Every additional space means one more person can find safety and support during these challenging times,” she stated. The Centre aims to create a welcoming environment where individuals can access not only shelter but also additional resources, including mental health support and employment services.
The temporary shelter spaces will operate until March 2024, providing a crucial lifeline to those facing homelessness during the colder months. The Centre collaborates with local organizations and volunteers to ensure that the services offered meet the diverse needs of the community.
As the region grapples with rising housing costs and economic uncertainty, the Victoria Native Friendship Centre’s initiative is a significant step towards mitigating homelessness. The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for the Centre’s commitment to providing safe shelter.
In addition to the shelter expansion, the Centre continues to offer a variety of programs aimed at fostering well-being and resilience among vulnerable populations. These programs address not just immediate needs but also long-term solutions for stability and independence.
The Victoria Native Friendship Centre remains dedicated to supporting individuals and families in need, championing inclusivity, and advocating for social change. As the organization moves forward, it seeks further partnerships and resources to enhance its impact and continue serving the community effectively.
