Victoria Runner Raises $80,000 for Friend Battling ALS

Adam Trimm, a runner from Victoria, has launched a fundraising campaign that has garnered nearly $80,000 to support his friend and colleague, Derek Breen, who is battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This initiative coincides with Trimm’s participation in the Royal Victoria Half Marathon scheduled for October 8, 2025.
Derek Breen, diagnosed with ALS in June 2024, has experienced significant changes in his health, including alterations in his speech and mobility. The disease, which leaves cognitive functions intact while progressively weakening the body, has posed numerous challenges for Breen and his family. “Losing my voice,” Breen said, reflecting on the most difficult aspect of his journey.
Despite the challenges, Breen maintains a sense of humor. Trimm, who has worked alongside Breen at Mac Reno Design Build for years, initially attempted to dedicate races to his friend in order to raise funds. Breen declined these offers, prompting Trimm to take a different approach. “I just said, ‘I’m gonna create this GoFundMe and throw 20 bucks in. I hope you like it,’” Trimm shared.
The campaign quickly gained traction within the local community, particularly among tradespeople. As donations continued to flow in, the goal expanded to $100,000. A portion of the funds raised will also be allocated to the ALS Society of BC, aimed at helping other families facing similar battles.
In a recorded message, Breen expressed gratitude for the support he has received. “This is all Adam’s idea. I was skeptical at first, but we’ve been amazed by the support. It has lifted my spirits. Thank you, Adam,” he stated, showcasing his appreciation even as he struggles with his condition.
Trimm, who has dedicated himself to running over the past few years, is gearing up for what will be his third half marathon. His commitment to Breen has not only motivated him to push through physical discomfort but also to inspire others to contribute to the cause.
The Royal Victoria Marathon, which will feature Trimm’s run, serves as a platform for raising awareness about ALS and the impact it has on affected families. Those wishing to assist in this cause can donate via the GoFundMe campaign, as even small contributions can make a significant difference.
As the event approaches, the local community is rallying around Trimm and Breen, demonstrating the power of solidarity in times of adversity.
