Victoria’s Heart of Gold Gala Raises Over $3 Million for Transplant Youth

On August 23, 2025, the inaugural Heart of Gold Gala & Concert took place at the Victoria Conference Centre, successfully raising over $3 million for young organ transplant recipients and their families. The event, hosted by the Simon Keith Foundation, attracted approximately 450 guests for an evening filled with music, personal stories, and a commitment to philanthropy.
Performers at the gala included international vocalists Vonzell Solomon, Matt Mauser, and Pia Toscano, alongside traditional Scottish Pipers and the London Essentials. The evening was co-hosted by Ron MacLean, known for his role on Hockey Night in Canada, and Jason Pires of Global BC. Transplant recipients shared their personal journeys, highlighting the importance of community support.
Celebrating Resilience and Advocacy
The gala served not only as a fundraising event but also as a platform for solidarity with young transplant recipients. According to Simon Keith, the world’s first professional athlete to play after receiving a heart transplant, “The Heart of Gold Gala & Concert was about much more than a celebration. It was an act of solidarity with young transplant recipients and their families, whose journeys include both challenges and ongoing resilience.”
Keith founded the Simon Keith Foundation in 2012, driven by his desire to support youth facing similar health challenges. This year’s gala marked the 40th anniversary of his first heart transplant, a significant milestone that has influenced both his sports career and his advocacy for organ donation.
“Hosting the first Heart of Gold Gala & Concert in my hometown was a dream come true,” Keith expressed. “Thank you to the unwavering support of sponsors, donors, volunteers, and attendees. Your impact will change lives for years to come.”
Impact and Recognition
The funds raised, totaling $3.13 million, will be directed towards programs designed to help young transplant recipients return to healthy, active lifestyles. This includes support for non-medical expenses for families, scholarships, and campaigns aimed at raising awareness about organ donation.
The event also recognized outstanding contributions to society. Michael Ravenhill was honored as National Humanitarian of the Year, while Rob and Bette McAdams received the title of National Business & Philanthropic Leaders of the Year.
After his initial transplant in 1986, Simon Keith went on to have a successful career in professional soccer and later received a second heart and kidney transplant in 2019. His advocacy efforts culminated in his appointment to the Order of Canada in 2022, recognizing his significant contributions to raising awareness about organ donation.
Since its inception, the Simon Keith Foundation has raised millions to support transplant families and encourage organ donor registrations across North America. For those wishing to contribute to this vital cause, donations can be made at simonkeith.com/foundation.
