Vortex Marks 30 Years of Transforming Aquatic Play Worldwide

Vortex Aquatic Structures International celebrated three decades of innovation in aquatic play with a special event at its headquarters in Montreal. The company, known for pioneering the first Splashpad® and developing award-winning water play systems, has achieved over 12,000 installations in more than 50 countries. These projects not only enhance recreational spaces but also foster community interaction, cognitive development, and physical skills among children.
Stephen Hamelin, Founder and CEO of Vortex, emphasized the significance of this milestone, stating, “Celebrating 30 years is a proud milestone for Vortex. It’s a tribute to the power of innovation, purpose, and people.” He highlighted how the company began as a means to revitalize underused parks and has since evolved into a global movement that transforms public spaces.
The celebratory gathering included notable attendees such as Tim Thomas, Mayor of Pointe-Claire, and Michael Suk, MD, JD, MPH, MBA, Chair of the Musculoskeletal Institute at Geisinger Health System. Dr. Suk has collaborated with Vortex for over ten years through the Health and Play Consortium, advocating for the integration of play into public health initiatives.
From Local Start-Up to Global Leader
Since its inception, Vortex has grown to employ nearly 250 individuals and maintains regional offices in the United States, Spain, and the Netherlands. In 2024, the company expanded its European operations by acquiring Dutch-based Watergames & More. This acquisition doubled its regional revenue within a year and enhanced its local manufacturing and service capacities. Looking ahead, Vortex plans to inaugurate a new manufacturing facility in Plattsburgh, New York, in 2026, further strengthening its operations in the region.
“For the first 25 years, our focus was solely on exporting from Canada. Today, we’re evolving into a true multinational by establishing local footprints in strategic regions like Europe and the United States,” Hamelin noted. The company is also exploring opportunities for expansion into the Middle East.
Commitment to Sustainability
As a leader in the aquatic play sector, Vortex prioritizes sustainability and responsible management of water resources. The company employs advanced water controller technology and tailored water management solutions that adhere to local environmental regulations. Many Vortex systems are designed to recycle 100% of the water used, while others effectively reuse water for irrigation or return it to local water tables.
With urban areas increasingly seeking ways to combat heat islands and promote sustainable practices, Vortex exemplifies leadership in developing solutions that benefit future generations. Hamelin remarked on the company’s vision, emphasizing its commitment to creating inclusive water experiences that spark wonder and enrich public life.
Vortex’s journey began thirty years ago with the introduction of the Splashpad®, transforming neglected parks into vibrant community hubs. Today, the company continues its mission to provide engaging water play environments in premier locations worldwide, including New York City, Barcelona, Miami, Montreal, Chicago, Paris, and Dubai.
With a focus on innovation, Vortex aims to make water play more accessible and inspiring for everyone, enhancing community well-being through play.
