WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert Seeks to Mend Player Relations

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has acknowledged the need to rebuild relationships with players following criticisms voiced by Napheesa Collier, a star with the Minnesota Lynx, earlier this week. Engelbert made her comments on Friday, just before Game 1 of the WNBA Finals, emphasizing the importance of player satisfaction within the league.

Engelbert expressed disappointment over Collier’s remarks, which suggested a lack of care and communication from the league. “I was disheartened to hear that some players feel the league and that I personally do not care about them or listen to them,” she stated. She recognized the league’s responsibility to enhance player appreciation and support, affirming, “If the players in the ‘W’ don’t feel appreciated and valued from the league, we have to do better and I have to do better.”

Plans for Improvement and Future Negotiations

In light of recent criticisms, Engelbert outlined plans for a thorough review of officiating standards through a new “state of the game” committee. This initiative aims to address concerns regarding the physical nature of the game and the corresponding officiating practices. It will include input from players, coaches, general managers, and other stakeholders to ensure that their perspectives are taken into account.

The upcoming week will also see meetings between the league and the players’ union to discuss a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Engelbert is hopeful for a resolution, although she acknowledged that the October 31, 2023, deadline may not be met. “We have extended deadlines in the past,” she remarked, recalling previous negotiations that required extensions to reach satisfactory agreements.

Both the league and the players share a common goal of increasing player salaries. Engelbert affirmed, “We continue to meet and have important conversations with the players’ association. I want to reiterate that we want much of the same things that the players want.”

Addressing Player Concerns

Collier’s critical assessment included allegations that Engelbert made disparaging comments about Caitlin Clark, a rising star in the league, suggesting that Clark was essential for the WNBA’s financial success. Engelbert refuted those claims, stating, “Caitlin has been a transformational player in this league. She’s brought in tens of millions of new fans to the game.”

Engelbert has also been proactive in her tenure, having delivered on numerous promises since her appointment in 2019. Under her leadership, the league has secured over $2.2 billion in a new media rights deal and plans to introduce six expansion teams by 2030. Additionally, the WNBA implemented a full charter flight program this season, a move aimed at improving player safety and travel conditions.

Engelbert is committed to facing the challenges ahead, stating firmly, “I’ve never been a quitter. I’m entering my 40th year in business. I’ve never shied away from tough situations.” As the WNBA continues to grow, Engelbert recognizes that establishing strong relationships with players is essential for the league’s future success.
