Cambridge Author Celebrates Galt Arena Gardens’ Rich History

A new book by Cambridge author David Menary highlights the history of the Galt Arena Gardens, which has been a cornerstone of the Cambridge community for over a century. Titled 100 Years of Galt Arena Gardens: The Most Storied Arena in the World, the book chronicles the arena’s legacy and the notable players who graced its ice, including legends like Normie Himes, Bobby Hull, and Gordie Howe.
Menary dedicated five years to researching the arena’s history, driven by a committee’s invitation to document its centennial. He shared insights during an interview with CBC Radio‘s Craig Norris, reflecting on the extensive process of compiling stories and records. Menary’s background as a sports writer provided him with valuable resources, including interviews with hockey greats and archival materials.
The journey was not without challenges. Menary faced interruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the closure of many archives. Nonetheless, he persevered, uncovering new stories and details. One particularly poignant chapter focuses on the friendship between Gordie Howe and Marty Pavelich, detailing their long train journeys to Galt in 1944, a time when their futures in hockey were uncertain.
Menary recounted, “Those long train rides were really the last long train rides they ever had by themselves, and to think about what they were going to do.” This kind of personal history enriches the narrative of the arena, making it more than just a collection of dates and events.
The book is substantial, resembling a university textbook in size, and features over 1,000 photographs. Despite advice to focus solely on visuals, Menary opted to include a wealth of stories, aiming to engage readers from various sports backgrounds.
Menary expressed his hope that readers will recognize the significance of the Galt Arena Gardens, a venue that has been “hiding in plain sight” for decades. He noted that its history has often gone uncelebrated, despite its importance to past and present players. “We should do everything we can to celebrate it and preserve it,” he emphasized.
The title, A History of the Most Storied Arena in the World, reflects Menary’s belief in the arena’s unique legacy. He argues that the players and events associated with Galt have made it a significant part of Canadian sports history, deserving of remembrance and respect.
As the community prepares to commemorate the centennial of the Galt Arena Gardens, Menary’s book serves as a reminder of the rich tapestry of stories interwoven with its history. It invites both longtime fans and newcomers to appreciate the impact this cherished venue has had on the world of sports.
