Cambridge Author Unveils Rich History of Galt Arena Gardens

A new book by Cambridge author David Menary delves into the history of the Galt Arena Gardens, Canada’s longest continuously operating arena. This iconic venue has served the Cambridge community for over 100 years, and Menary dedicated the last five years to researching its rich past and the many notable players who skated there, including Gordie Howe, Normie Himes, and Bobby Hull. His book, titled 100 Years of Galt Arena Gardens: The Most Storied Arena in the World, aims to celebrate this piece of Canadian history.
In an interview with CBC Radio host Craig Norris, Menary shared the inspiration behind his extensive research. He was initially approached by a committee in preparation for the arena’s centenary celebration. This sparked a journey that unfolded over several years, during which Menary unearthed a wealth of stories and historical details, many of which he had previously recorded during his time as a sports writer.
Menary recounted how he revisited old notes from interviews with hockey legends, including Gordie Howe and Marty Pavelich. He described the personal connection these athletes had with the arena, particularly the long train rides they took to reach Galt in 1944, during the final year of World War II. These journeys, filled with uncertainty about their future in hockey, were among the last they would undertake alone.
Researching the book proved challenging, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when archives and the arena itself were inaccessible. Menary described the process as both “laborious” and “fun,” highlighting a particularly difficult moment when a computer file became corrupted, threatening to derail his progress. Despite these setbacks, he found joy in uncovering new insights and stories about the arena and its significant impact on the sport.
The book, which contains over 1,000 photographs, has an academic heft that surprised even Menary. He admitted that some advised him to focus solely on images, suggesting that readers would prefer a visual experience over a narrative. Instead, he aimed to provide a comprehensive account that blends both history and storytelling, making it accessible to a wide audience.
Menary hopes readers take away a renewed appreciation for the arena. “We have this gem,” he emphasized, noting that the arena had been “hiding in plain sight” for nearly a century without receiving the recognition it deserves. Renowned players like Gordie Howe frequently returned to Galt, underscoring its significance in their lives and careers.
The title of the book, A History of the Most Storied Arena in the World, is not mere hyperbole, according to Menary. He believes the rich tapestry of player stories and events that have unfolded at the arena justifies the claim.
As the anniversary approaches, Menary’s work serves as a reminder of the cultural and historical importance of the Galt Arena Gardens. His book is set to inspire both local residents and sports enthusiasts to celebrate and preserve this vital piece of Canadian heritage.
In a community anchored by its sports history, Menary’s book ensures that the legacy of the Galt Arena Gardens will be recognized and appreciated for generations to come.
