Catch the Orionids Meteor Shower on October 22

The Orionids meteor shower, renowned for its bright and swift meteors, will peak in the early hours of October 22, 2023. Observers in various locations around the world can expect to see approximately 20 meteors per hour as the shower reaches its maximum activity.
What to Expect During the Orionids
The Orionids are particularly exciting due to their speed, entering the Earth’s atmosphere at about 66 km/s. This rapid movement results in bright streaks across the sky that can last for several moments after the meteor has passed. Historically, the Orionids originate from the tail of Halley’s Comet, which is one of the most famous comets in our solar system.
This year, viewing conditions are expected to be relatively favourable. The moon will be in its waning crescent phase, with around 30% of its surface illuminated. It will rise in the early morning hours, allowing several hours of unobstructed observation before 03:00 BST. This means that stargazers should have a great opportunity to witness the meteor shower without significant moonlight interference.
Viewing Strategies for Different Hemispheres
For those in the northern hemisphere, the constellation Orion will begin to rise just before midnight, gradually climbing higher as the night progresses. This positioning will enhance visibility as the night transitions into morning.
In contrast, observers in the southern hemisphere will have an even better vantage point, as Orion will be located higher in the sky. This elevation could lead to more spectacular views of the meteors, making the Orionids a must-see event for astronomy enthusiasts worldwide.
As with any meteor shower, the experience can vary significantly based on weather conditions and light pollution. Enthusiasts are encouraged to find dark areas away from city lights for the best viewing experience.
