George Clooney Reflects on Future in Netflix Film ‘Jay Kelly’
George Clooney stars in the upcoming Netflix film “Jay Kelly,” where he portrays an actor reflecting on his past. Yet during the film’s premiere at the American Film Institute festival in Los Angeles, Clooney emphasized his focus on the future rather than dwelling on his illustrious career.
At 64 years old, Clooney expressed his intention to keep moving forward. “I’m not really ready to look backwards and sort of rest on it,” he stated in an interview with AFP on Thursday. Instead of reminiscing, he prefers to anticipate what lies ahead. “I sort of enjoy looking forward and seeing what’s coming next,” he added.
Exploring Themes of Time and Relationships
Directed by Noah Baumbach, “Jay Kelly” delves into the emotional turmoil of an actor in the latter stages of his career. Clooney’s character is driven by a desire to reconnect with his daughters after three decades in the industry. This journey takes him, along with his manager, played by Adam Sandler, and press agent, portrayed by Laura Dern, on a trip across Europe. Throughout the film, he confronts his feelings of loneliness, past errors, and the cost of his success.
Clooney reflected on his character’s struggles, noting, “I am lucky enough to not be as unhappy as he is and to have really good friends and people that I like.” He emphasized that he does not share the same sense of isolation that his character experiences.
Sandler, 59, acknowledged the film’s unique perspective on aging and the passage of time. He remarked on the authenticity of witnessing an actor grow older on camera. “I don’t look back at work I wish I would have done,” Sandler shared. Instead, he focuses on the present, stating, “I do say… time is ticking, let’s make sure we get it all in there, and make sure we get it all in there outside of movies, family and stuff like that.” He added, “And if we’re doing movies, let’s do stuff that’s going to bring joy to people.”
