A recent survey by SolarWinds highlights the challenges faced by IT professionals, revealing that one-third of them feel only noticed when something goes wrong. The findings shed light on the stressors within the IT sector, including tight deadlines, long working hours, and the complexities of rapidly evolving technology.

According to the IT Community Pulse survey, which gathered responses from **437 IT professionals** across Europe, the Americas, and the Asia Pacific, a significant portion of IT personnel feel underappreciated. Almost **31%** of respondents indicated that they are only recognized when a crisis arises. This sentiment underscores the disconnect between IT teams and other departments within organizations.

The survey, conducted in **September 2025**, also examined common frustrations experienced by IT staff. Participants reported that the most irritating phrase they hear from colleagues is: “I didn’t touch anything.” Following closely is the question, “You’re good with computers, right?” and the complaint, “The Wi-Fi’s broken.” These recurring statements illustrate a lack of understanding of IT roles among non-technical staff.

Understanding IT Professionals’ Challenges

The ambiguity surrounding the term information technology contributes to the challenges faced by these professionals. IT encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, leading to varied perceptions of what the role entails. This complexity often results in IT workers feeling overwhelmed and underappreciated.

In addition to feeling overlooked, **28%** of IT professionals wish their colleagues recognized the multitude of requests they manage from different departments. The jargon frequently used in corporate environments further compounds their frustrations. Notably, **31%** of participants cited “AI” as the buzzword that makes them want to “chuck their monitor out the window,” followed by “digital transformation” at **15%** and “seamless integration” at **13%**.

When asked what they desire in return for their efforts, **65%** of respondents expressed a preference for an unlimited IT budget. However, a more attainable request was highlighted by **51%**, who indicated that a simple “thank you” would significantly boost their morale. Additionally, **37%** would appreciate a public apology from non-IT staff for misunderstandings.

Sascha Giese, Tech Evangelist at SolarWinds, commented on the survey’s findings, emphasizing the vital role IT professionals play in maintaining organizational operations. “Every day, IT professionals keep networks secure, services running, and hybrid work alive. But it’s often without fanfare and usually without thanks,” Giese stated. He further expressed that while an unlimited budget may be unrealistic, fostering patience and gratitude within the workplace can greatly alleviate the stresses faced by IT teams.

Addressing the Disconnect

The insights from the IT Community Pulse survey are critical in understanding the dynamics between IT and other departments. Organizations can benefit from recognizing the contributions of IT professionals and addressing the issues they face. Acknowledging their efforts through simple gestures, such as expressing gratitude or clarifying communications, can enhance workplace relationships and improve overall morale.

As companies continue to navigate the complexities of technology and its integration into business processes, fostering a culture of appreciation and understanding within teams will be essential. It is clear that a supportive environment can make a significant difference in the well-being and motivation of IT professionals.

The survey results reveal a pressing need for organizations to bridge the gap between IT and other business functions, ensuring that these essential workers receive the recognition and respect they rightfully deserve.
