NASA Reveals Stunning Images of Interstellar Comet 3I/Atlas

NASA has released breathtaking close-up images of the interstellar comet known as 3I/Atlas, which is making a brief passage through our solar system. Discovered during the summer months, this comet is only the third confirmed object to journey from another star into our celestial neighborhood. It recently passed by Mars in October, coming within a distance of approximately 18 million miles (about 29 million kilometers) from the planet.

Several NASA spacecraft stationed at and near Mars captured detailed observations of the comet as it moved swiftly through the inner solar system. Additionally, two satellites from the European Space Agency (ESA) in orbit around Mars also contributed valuable data. Currently, astronomers are focusing their ground-based telescopes on 3I/Atlas, which is located about 190 million miles (around 307 million kilometers) from Earth.

Upcoming Closest Approach and Comet Characteristics

The closest approach of 3I/Atlas to our planet is anticipated to occur in mid-December 2023, when it will come within 167 million miles (approximately 269 million kilometers) of Earth. After that, the comet will speed away into interstellar space, never to return. This comet, named after the telescope in Chile that first detected it, is estimated to measure between 1,444 feet (about 440 meters) and 3.5 miles (roughly 5.6 kilometers) in diameter.

The Juice spacecraft, which is en route to Jupiter, has also been monitoring this comet closely throughout the month. As 3I/Atlas neared the sun, the spacecraft directed its cameras and scientific instruments toward the comet. However, data from these observations will not be available until February 2024, due to the spacecraft’s main antenna functioning as a heat shield while in proximity to the sun.

For those interested in observing 3I/Atlas, the comet is visible from Earth in the predawn sky. Amateur astronomers can use binoculars or telescopes to catch a glimpse of this celestial visitor.
