Oregon Leads U.S. States in Cybercrime Losses, New Study Reveals

New research has identified significant financial losses due to cybercrime across the United States, with Oregon residents facing the highest average loss per victim at an alarming $65,045. This figure is more than double that of any other state, highlighting the severe impact of cybercrime in the region. The study, conducted by the firm SSL Dragon, analyzed data from the Internet Crime Complaint Center and the U.S. Census Bureau to provide a comprehensive view of the issue.

According to the findings, Oregon’s total losses reached over $586 million in just one year, affecting 9,013 individuals. The state also reported the highest total losses per 100,000 residents, amounting to $13.7 million. Following Oregon, Wyoming ranked second with an average loss of $31,592 per victim, resulting in a cumulative loss of $43.5 million among 1,377 victims.

Regional Variations in Cybercrime Impact

For instance, while Alaska recorded the highest rate of cybercrime victims at 915 per 100,000 residents, the average loss per victim was comparatively low at $3,884. New Jersey follows as the third most affected state, reporting average losses of $27,710 per victim, with total losses nearing $435 million across 15,702 victims. California, while having the highest overall financial loss at over $2.5 billion, ranks fourth in average loss per victim at $26,389, affecting 96,351 residents.

Connecticut rounds out the top five states, showing an average loss of $25,262 per victim, totaling $143.9 million across 5,695 reported incidents. Nevada, New York, North Dakota, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire also feature prominently in the top ten rankings, with significant financial impacts on their residents.
