Swine Innovation Porc Appoints New Chair to Lead Research Efforts
An important leadership change has occurred within the Canadian pork sector. Swine Innovation Porc (SIP), the organization responsible for coordinating research and development for the swine industry, has appointed Mark Ferguson as its new chair. Ferguson, who took on the role last month, has over 20 years of experience in the field and is currently the General Manager of the Saskatchewan Pork Development Commission based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Ferguson’s extensive background includes significant contributions to various industry growth initiatives. Growing up on a family farm near Edgeley, Saskatchewan, he brings both practical knowledge and leadership experience to the position. He also serves as Chair of the Prairie Swine Centre board of directors, further solidifying his expertise in the sector.
In expressing his commitment to SIP, Ferguson stated, “I look forward to working with our members and partners towards our shared vision of ensuring long-term profitable pork production through collaborative research and innovation.” He emphasized the critical role SIP plays in uniting producer groups and industry partners across Canada for coordinated research efforts, which are essential for the sector’s success.
Ferguson will work alongside René Roy, who serves as Vice-Chair, and Jorge Correa, the Treasurer, as part of the SIP Board of Directors’ Executive team. He succeeds outgoing Chair Arno Schober, who led the board since 2021 and significantly contributed to the organization’s growth during his tenure.
Daniel Ramage, General Manager of SIP, acknowledged Ferguson’s leadership capabilities, stating that he will continue to provide vital direction within the Canadian pork research community. Ramage also expressed gratitude towards Schober for his dedicated service and efforts in driving innovation for the pork value chain.
Founded in 2010, Swine Innovation Porc is a not-for-profit organization that represents the Canadian Pork Council along with eight provincial pork producer organizations. With Ferguson at the helm, the organization is poised to strengthen its focus on research and innovation, addressing the evolving needs of the Canadian pork industry.
