Telus Spark Appoints Guy Labine as New CEO to Inspire Future Generations

Telus Spark Science Centre has officially appointed Guy Labine as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective November 19, 2023. Labine, who is relocating to Calgary from Scottsdale, Arizona, will transition from his role as president and CEO of the Arizona Science Center, where he has been serving as a senior adviser to the interim president. His appointment marks a significant step for Telus Spark as it aims to enhance its engagement with the community and broaden its outreach.
Labine, originally from Sudbury, Ontario, expressed enthusiasm about returning to Canadian spelling and culture. He has deep roots in Sudbury, where he previously served as the CEO of Science North for 11 years. During his tenure there, he developed strong ties with Indigenous communities and secured $50 million in funding for innovative programs and visitor experiences. Science North is recognized as the second largest science centre in Canada.
Labine’s Vision for Telus Spark
Labine’s leadership experience extends beyond regional boundaries. He has played a pivotal role in the Canadian Association of Science Centres and has served as chair of the global Association of Science and Technology Centers. His work in Arizona included expanding the center’s reach statewide and fostering relationships with 22 tribal nations. Notably, he led the development of the Dorrance Dome, a next-generation immersive experience that is set to open this fall.
Reflecting on his appointment, Labine stated, “I’m honoured to join Telus Spark Centre and to build on a legacy of inspiring minds of all ages. Science and discovery have never been more important, and I look forward to working with the talented Telus Spark team to make an even greater impact in our community.” His vision aligns with his previous efforts in Arizona, where he sought to engage a diverse audience, including tourists, by creating an environment that is both educational and entertaining.
Community Engagement and Future Plans
Labine aims to encourage a wider demographic to engage with Telus Spark, drawing upon his successful strategies from Arizona. He highlighted the importance of captivating visitors and fostering a sense of wonder, emphasizing that science centers can play a crucial role in community development.
As Telus Spark transitions to new leadership, Labine’s extensive background in science communication and community outreach positions him to lead the centre into a promising future. His commitment to enhancing the visitor experience and fostering educational opportunities reflects the centre’s mission to inspire curiosity and a love for science among people of all ages.
The leadership transition comes at an essential time for Telus Spark as it seeks to expand its influence and relevance in the rapidly evolving landscape of science education and community engagement. Labine’s track record suggests a strong potential for innovative programs that will resonate with both local residents and visitors alike.
