Trust in AI for Moral Decisions Remains Elusive, Study Finds

A recent study from the University of Kent reveals that public trust in AI systems, specifically those designed to provide moral guidance, remains low. Research conducted at the School of Psychology at the University of Kent examined public perception of AMAs compared to human advisors. The findings indicate a significant aversion to AMAs providing moral advice, even when the suggestions are identical to those offered by human counterparts. Notably, this distrust is pronounced when advice stems from utilitarian principles, which focus on maximizing benefits for the majority. In contrast, advisors who offer non-utilitarian recommendations—those that adhere to moral rules rather than striving for the best overall outcome—tend to be trusted more.

Participants in the study expressed a preference for advisors that prioritize individual rights over abstract results, especially in scenarios involving direct harm. This suggests a deeper value placed on moral frameworks that align with human emotions and ethical concerns. Even when individuals agreed with an AMA’s advice, they maintained a level of skepticism about future interactions with AI systems in ethical contexts.

The research highlights that trust in AI extends beyond mere accuracy or consistency in responses. It fundamentally involves the alignment with human values and moral expectations. As AI systems increasingly enter the moral sphere, understanding public perception becomes essential for developers and policymakers.

The study, titled “People expect artificial moral advisors to be more utilitarian and distrust utilitarian moral advisors,” is published in the journal Cognition. It underscores the need for further exploration into how AI can be designed to better resonate with human ethical standards.
