Apple Revives Slide Over Feature in iPadOS 26.1 Beta Update

Apple has reintroduced the Slide Over feature in the latest developer beta of iPadOS 26.1, responding to user feedback regarding the removal of this multitasking option. Users had expressed dissatisfaction with the absence of Slide Over, which allowed for quick access to a secondary app while using the primary one. The updated feature aims to enhance the multitasking capabilities of iPads, making them more versatile for users accustomed to traditional laptop functionalities.
The inclusion of the Slide Over feature marks a significant shift in Apple’s approach to multitasking on the iPad. The previous version, iPadOS 26, introduced windowed multitasking that many users found powerful and flexible but eliminated the old Split View and Slide Over modes. While the new system allows for multiple windows and app resizing, it initially left out the familiar ease of accessing a temporary app via Slide Over.
Changes in Slide Over Functionality
In the new beta release, the Slide Over window can be accessed on top of other applications, similar to its predecessor. Users can invoke and dismiss the Slide Over window at will. However, it is important to note that the updated Slide Over allows only one app to be active in this mode at a time, unlike the previous version that permitted switching between multiple apps within Slide Over. Despite this limitation, users can reposition and resize the new Slide Over window, aligning it with the overall multitasking enhancements in iPadOS 26.
The new beta is part of Apple’s ongoing development cycle, following the feedback from platforms such as Reddit. Many users voiced their concerns about the removal of features that had become integral to their workflow. The decision to reintroduce Slide Over reflects Apple’s responsiveness to its user base and commitment to improving the iPad experience.
Expected Release Timeline
Apple has not confirmed a specific release date for the final version of iPadOS 26.1, nor for updates to iOS 26.1 and macOS 26.1. However, based on historical patterns, it is anticipated that the public release could occur in either October or November 2023, following additional beta iterations. As Apple continues to refine its software, users can look forward to enhancements that aim to bridge the gap between traditional computing and the flexibility of iPad usage.
The return of the Slide Over feature demonstrates Apple’s willingness to adapt its software in response to user needs, reinforcing the iPad’s position as a versatile device for both productivity and leisure.
