Barnes & Noble Unveils Plans for New NOOK E-Readers in 2026
Barnes & Noble has announced plans to release new NOOK e-readers in 2026, marking the first major update since the launch of the NOOK Glowlight 4 in 2021 and the NOOK Glowlight 4 Plus in 2023. The announcement came from the head of the NOOK division during a recent interview, indicating a renewed commitment to the e-reader market.
While the current NOOK models have their strengths, they lack certain features that could enhance user experience. For instance, the NOOK Glowlight 4 Plus is the only model capable of playing audiobooks, as earlier versions do not support Bluetooth or audio playback. Many users are hoping that the upcoming models will include audio functionality, which could drive content sales and attract a broader audience.
The discussion around new devices has also touched on the possibility of an e-notebook, akin to offerings from competitors such as the Kindle Scribe and Kobo Elipsa 2. The head of the NOOK division hinted at the potential for such a device, although it would require a significant investment in both hardware and software development. The NOOK’s operation on the Google Android system may facilitate this process, making it easier to create a functional notebook.
It is anticipated that Barnes & Noble will introduce at least two new e-readers and possibly a tablet in their 2026 lineup. Historically, the company has released an entry-level model to compete with devices like the Kindle Paperwhite and Kobo Clara BW, alongside a more premium option priced around $200. The upcoming models are expected to incorporate a color e-paper screen, a feature increasingly common among their competitors in the United States.
Physical keyboards, a defining characteristic of the NOOK series for over a decade, are likely to remain a staple in the new designs. As Barnes & Noble prepares for these releases, questions abound regarding consumer preferences. What features would entice users to purchase the new NOOK e-readers? Would enhancements such as the Carta 1300 display technology or a NOOK Color model be enough to sway opinions?

As Barnes & Noble gears up for its 2026 launch, the anticipation among consumers and industry experts alike continues to grow. The success of these new devices may hinge on their ability to adapt to the changing needs of readers in a digital age.
