Google Launches ‘Gemini in Chrome’ AI Assistant for Workspace Users

Google has officially begun rolling out its AI browsing assistant, Gemini in Chrome, to users of Google Workspace. This significant launch follows the announcement made two weeks ago, highlighting Gemini as a key feature among a suite of new AI tools designed to enhance productivity within the Chrome browser. The update is now available for eligible business and education users on platforms including Mac, Windows, and iOS.
What is Gemini in Chrome?
For those unfamiliar with the feature, Gemini in Chrome operates as an integrated AI assistant directly within the browser. Its standout capability lies in its ability to understand and utilize the context of users’ activities. Gemini can reference up to ten open browser tabs alongside various Google Workspace applications, enabling it to perform complex tasks. These include summarizing and comparing information from multiple websites, answering detailed queries, and facilitating two-way conversations through a feature called Gemini Live. This functionality allows users to maintain their workflow without interruptions.
Key Details for Workspace Users
The rollout of Gemini in Chrome comes equipped with essential controls and protections tailored for business and education environments. According to Google, the AI assistant incorporates enterprise-grade data protections, ensuring that user content is not reviewed by humans or utilized for model training without explicit permission.
Workspace administrators will have significant control over the assistant’s features. By default, Gemini will be activated for organizations that have already enabled the Gemini app, but administrators have the option to disable it at the domain, organizational unit, or group level if desired.
There are some initial limitations to consider with this launch. Currently, Gemini in Chrome is only available in the United States and is restricted to English-speaking users aged 18 and older. Additionally, the feature will not be accessible to customers operating under a HIPAA Business Associate Amendment (BAA).
This rollout marks an exciting advancement for Workspace users, providing access to a powerful new productivity tool. As the feature is on an extended rollout schedule, it may take up to 15 days for all eligible users to gain access to Gemini in Chrome.
The integration of such advanced AI capabilities into everyday workflows is set to redefine how professionals interact with digital tools, promising to enhance efficiency and streamline tasks.
