New Shuttle Service Launched in Indian Head to Aid Rural Residents

A new shuttle service in Indian Head, Saskatchewan is now providing essential transportation for residents needing out-of-town medical and wellness appointments. The initiative, launched by the not-for-profit organization Wheels for Wellness, aims to offer “safe, reliable and affordable transportation” for those living in Indian Head and its surrounding communities.
“This service has been a topic of discussion for the past seven years,” said Meagan McEwen, the community development officer for the town. “People face various challenges in getting to appointments, whether it’s discomfort with city driving or simply a lack of transportation options.”
In a notable community response, the town, which has a population of fewer than 2,000, received 80 volunteer applications to support the shuttle service. The team comprises three dispatchers and 22 drivers who will operate the service. Currently, shuttle trips are set to destinations including Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn, Melville, and Yorkton.
“Our plan includes expanding the service to other surrounding communities,” McEwen added. “If individuals can reach Indian Head, we can certainly provide transportation from there.”
The concept for this shuttle service drew inspiration from other successful programs in the province. Nial Kuyek, vice-president and secretary for Wheels for Wellness, stated, “We are modeling our service after the Gravelbourg Cares Shuttle, which has been operational for six or seven years. Their average passenger load is 1.8, despite having a smaller population than ours.”
To date, Wheels for Wellness has raised over $50,000 in donations, with the goal of purchasing the van it is currently leasing. The inaugural trip took place on March 1, 2024, traveling down Highway 1 towards Regina, marking a significant milestone for the community’s transportation needs.
The launch of this service addresses a critical gap in rural healthcare access, providing residents with a reliable means to attend essential medical appointments and supporting their overall wellness.
