Red Deer County Seeks Funding for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
Red Deer County has officially submitted an application for funding to support the establishment of two electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at the Red Deer County Centre. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility to charging facilities for electric vehicle users and promote sustainability within the community.
The county has already installed two EV chargers at its main administrative center. According to Andrew Treu, the Environment Services Manager for Red Deer County, the funding application is directed to Alberta Municipalities through the Electric Vehicle Charging Program. Treu emphasized the benefits of this project: “Providing EV charging at County Centre is a service for our visiting business partners; it’s another amenity that supports sustainability and innovation.”
Funding Strategy and Previous Initiatives
This latest effort is part of a broader strategy to modernize the county’s vehicle fleet. In 2023, Red Deer County acquired two Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, with financial assistance from the province. This support came through programs managed by the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC), which is a collaborative initiative involving Alberta Municipalities, the Rural Municipalities of Alberta, and the Government of Alberta.
In 2022, Red Deer County received further funding from the MCCAC for the purchase of a Kia Niro EV and for the installation of two additional charging stations. The MCCAC’s Electric Vehicles for Municipalities program, alongside the Electric Vehicle Charging Program, is designed to facilitate the transition to more efficient electric vehicles while reducing greenhouse gas emissions in municipalities.
Alberta’s Commitment to Electric Mobility
The Electric Vehicle Charging Program, introduced in 2023, allocates $1.7 million in funding for successful applicants to purchase and install EV charging stations across Alberta. Since its launch, Alberta Municipalities has successfully funded over 170 new charging stations throughout the province, showcasing a strong commitment to advancing electric mobility.
As the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, initiatives like those in Red Deer County play a crucial role in providing the necessary infrastructure. The county’s proactive approach not only serves its residents but also positions it as a supportive partner for visiting businesses and promotes a greener future.
