Salt Spring Island Residents Invited to Provide Input on Fare Hike
Residents of Salt Spring Island are being invited to participate in a public consultation regarding a proposed increase in transit fares. After a span of fourteen years without a fare adjustment, BC Transit is considering various options to raise fares, which have remained at $2.25 since they were last increased in 2012.
The fare increase options include a gradual adjustment in line with inflation, an immediate fare hike to match inflation rates, or a fixed fare increase to $2.75, accompanied by lower monthly pass costs. The last fare change occurred when prices rose from $2 to $2.25 in 2012, following a similar period of pricing stability since the service’s inception in 2008.
To gather community feedback, BC Transit has launched a survey available on its website. Additionally, an open house is scheduled for January 23 from 12:00 to 15:00 at the Rainbow Recreation Centre, located at 262 Rainbow Road. Residents will have the opportunity to discuss the proposed fare changes and express their preferences.
The proposed schedules for fare increases vary by option. Under the gradual increase aligned with inflation, fares would rise slowly over time. The immediate increase would implement a more substantial change, while the fixed fare option would provide a clear increase to $2.75 but offer reduced monthly pass costs.
This potential fare adjustment follows recent fare increases implemented by BC Transit in other regions, including Victoria, Nanaimo, Comox Valley, and Cowichan Valley. The consultation process illustrates BC Transit’s effort to engage with the local community and ensure that any fare changes reflect the needs and opinions of Salt Spring Island residents.
Community members are encouraged to participate in the survey and attend the open house to make their voices heard regarding the future of transit fares on the island. The feedback collected will play a crucial role in shaping the decision on fare adjustments moving forward.
