Scout Motors Plans Canada Launch for EVs by 2027 or 2028
Scout Motors has announced its intention to launch electric vehicles in Canada by 2027 or 2028. This news follows the debut of the brand’s Terra SUV and Traveler pickup truck at the recent Los Angeles Auto Show, marking the first time Scout-branded vehicles have been showcased at an auto show in over 45 years. The company, which operates under the umbrella of the Volkswagen Group, aims to establish a presence primarily in the provinces of Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia.
The reemergence of the Scout brand comes after Volkswagen acquired the Scout trademark in 2022. The new models draw inspiration from the original Scout vehicles manufactured by International Harvester approximately 50 years ago. With a focus on robust off-road capabilities, Scout Motors plans to address the growing demand for electric SUVs and trucks that can perform in rugged conditions.
Market Strategy and Vehicle Features
Scout’s strategy involves launching with a two-model lineup: the Terra SUV and the Traveler pickup truck. This model approach has proven successful for other electric vehicle manufacturers, such as Rivian. As Scout prepares for its Canadian debut, the company is opting for corporately owned storefronts rather than traditional franchised dealerships. This strategy aims to enhance customer service and support in key urban markets.
In addition to the physical storefronts, Scout will establish mobile service units that will operate within a three-hour drive radius of its main locations. This proactive approach seeks to provide reassurance to customers, particularly in affluent areas such as Whistler, who may be concerned about service availability.
Scout Motors has already opened order banks for its vehicles, requiring a refundable deposit of $150 to reserve a unit. Although production at its American factory is not expected to ramp up for a couple of years, the company is optimistic about the demand for its electric offerings.
The Scout vehicles will be built on a frame chassis, appealing to off-road enthusiasts and those seeking “real trucks.” The fully electric models are projected to deliver approximately 550 kilometres of range, while variants with a gas-powered engine are expected to extend that range to over 800 kilometres. This dual powertrain setup is anticipated to combine the benefits of electric vehicles with the convenience of quick refueling.
As the automotive market shifts towards sustainable options, Scout Motors is positioning itself to be a strong player in the electric vehicle sector. With its robust offerings and innovative service model, the brand aims to carve out a significant presence in Canada by the end of the decade.
