Toyota Recalls Nearly 100,000 Vehicles in Canada Over Software Issue
Toyota Canada has issued a recall affecting nearly 100,000 vehicles across the country due to a software malfunction that impacts the rearview camera system. On October 30, 2023, Transport Canada confirmed the recall, which encompasses various models equipped with a panoramic view monitor. This software issue could cause the rearview camera image to freeze or fail to display correctly when the vehicle is shifted into reverse, posing a potential safety hazard.
According to Transport Canada, the affected models include certain Toyota and Lexus cars, minivans, and SUVs. If the rearview camera does not function properly, it may significantly impair the driver’s ability to see obstacles behind the vehicle, heightening the risk of accidents. The recall aligns with Canadian regulations mandating that a rearview image must display when reversing.
To rectify the issue, Toyota is reaching out to vehicle owners directly via written notification. Owners are encouraged to visit their local dealership to update the parking assist ECU software, which will resolve the problem.
For those wondering if their vehicle is impacted, Toyota provides resources to verify recall status. Owners can contact Toyota at 1 (888) 869-6828 or visit the company’s recall website. By entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), which is a unique 17-digit identifier, owners can easily check for any recalls. The VIN can be found on vehicle registration documents, insurance paperwork, and on a metal plate located on the dashboard or door pillar.
This is not the first instance of a software-related recall for Toyota Canada. Earlier in October 2023, Transport Canada reported a similar recall affecting 32,733 vehicles, indicating ongoing challenges with the visual systems in certain models.
As Toyota works to address these safety concerns, affected owners are urged to take immediate action to ensure their vehicles are updated and safe for use on the roads.
