Turo Outshines Traditional Rentals as Canadians Embrace Road Trips

Turo’s recent report on travel trends reveals a shift in Canadian vacation habits, highlighting a decline in U.S. travel and an increase in longer, out-of-province road trips. With the stunning landscapes and attractions across Canada, many families are seizing the opportunity to explore their own country. For instance, travel contributor Stephanie Wallcraft shared her experience of flying with her three children from Toronto to Victoria, British Columbia, where they faced challenges in finding suitable transportation.
Wallcraft needed a larger vehicle than her sister’s Nissan Kicks, which led her to consider rental options. Traditional car rental companies often provided the simplest solution, but in this case, she encountered difficulties finding a minivan in Victoria, despite planning two months in advance. This situation underscores how the growing popularity of platforms like Turo is changing the landscape of vehicle rentals.
Exploring the Options: Turo, Car-Sharing, and Traditional Rentals
When looking for a vehicle, Canadians now have several options beyond conventional rental companies. Turo operates similarly to Airbnb, allowing car owners to rent their vehicles directly to users. Pricing on Turo varies based on factors such as vehicle type, model, and rental duration. Wallcraft noted that she successfully booked a minivan through Turo, which was delivered to the airport, enhancing convenience for her family.
In addition to Turo, car-sharing services like Communauto offer an affordable and flexible alternative, particularly for those who may not need a car for an extended period. Car-sharing allows users to pick up vehicles in their neighborhoods on an hourly or daily basis, making it an ideal choice for shorter trips. However, it may not be practical for longer vacations.
Traditional car rental companies, such as Hertz and Avis, maintain extensive fleets and operate at airports, making them accessible for travelers arriving by plane. They provide a range of vehicle options, but availability can be limited, especially for specific models like minivans.
Cost Comparisons: Turo vs. Car-Sharing vs. Traditional Rentals
Cost is a significant factor when choosing a rental vehicle, and each option presents different pricing structures. Car-sharing is often the least expensive, with Communauto offering rates as low as $13 per hour, up to a maximum of $55 per day. However, additional costs may apply for mileage over a set limit.
On Turo, Wallcraft found a 2020 Honda Odyssey available for a total of $376.02 for a trip from October 16 to 19, excluding extras. In contrast, a minivan from Avis for the same period and location would cost approximately $624.17, demonstrating a notable price difference. Moreover, Turo allows owners to set their prices, which can lead to variations for similar vehicles in the same area.
Both Turo and traditional rental companies have their pros and cons. While Turo facilitates a more personalized experience with the potential for specific vehicle options, traditional rentals offer in-person service and established customer support. However, Turo’s app-based service eliminates the need to wait in lines, streamlining the rental process.
In conclusion, the choice between Turo, car-sharing, and traditional rental companies ultimately depends on individual needs and preferences. For those seeking a diverse range of vehicles and flexibility, Turo may be the best option. Conversely, if in-person service and well-established processes are preferred, traditional rental companies remain a viable choice. As Canadians continue to explore their own country, understanding these options will enhance their travel experiences.
