Vimeo Elevates 3D Video Experience for Apple Vision Pro Users
Vimeo has announced significant upgrades to its support for 3D video, enhancing its appeal to users of the Apple Vision Pro, including the latest M5 model. This development positions Vimeo as a competitive alternative to YouTube, particularly among those seeking a rich 3D viewing experience.
The standout feature of this update is the introduction of Apple Immersive Video support. This format accommodates stereoscopic 8K video and enables Spatial Audio through both the headset’s speakers and AirPods Pro. Currently, Apple Immersive Video can only be accessed via the Apple TV app, making Vimeo’s announcement particularly noteworthy.
In addition to Apple Immersive Video, Vimeo confirmed it is incorporating support for VR180. This popular standard for 3D video provides a 180-degree field of vision, allowing viewers to engage more fully with the content. Furthermore, Vimeo will adopt the Apple Projected Media Profile (APMP), a format first unveiled at Apple’s WWDC 2025 event. Unlike VR180, APMP supports both 180-degree and 360-degree video along with Wide FOV video. This format specifies encoding and decoding methods, along with other camera details, as reported by 9to5Mac.
Vimeo’s support for APMP will empower content creators to capture high-quality footage using Blackmagic cameras, edit in Final Cut Pro, and distribute their work directly through Vimeo. This capability could significantly streamline the production process for filmmakers focusing on immersive content.
Expanding 3D Content Availability
Historically, viewing 3D video has been a defining feature of the Apple Vision Pro. Yet, users have often found themselves limited by a lack of available content. With these enhancements, Vimeo aims to bridge that gap. As the platform actively supports Apple-specific features and formats, it could become a central hub for 3D content creators and viewers alike.
In contrast, YouTube, Vimeo’s primary competitor, has largely overlooked the burgeoning 3D space that Apple has introduced. While Vimeo enhances its offerings, Apple has taken steps to fill the content void as well. Recently, seven new Apple Immersive films were added to the Apple TV app, featuring a variety of experiences including MotoGP races, BBC Proms, and a documentary on Australia’s Eastern Kuku Yalanji people.
Vimeo’s advancements in 3D video support not only elevate the viewing experience for Apple Vision Pro users but also reflect an important shift in the digital content landscape. As the demand for immersive video continues to grow, Vimeo’s proactive approach may set it apart in an increasingly competitive environment.
