Aggu Candidate Advocates for Enhanced Community Program Funding
Joanna Quassa, the incumbent Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Aggu, has called for a significant change in the funding structure for community programs in Iglulik. Speaking to Nunavut News, Quassa emphasized that the current funding formula jeopardizes essential programs, particularly those aimed at supporting elders and youth.
Quassa proposed that funding for these programs should be allocated directly to the community rather than requiring applications. She stated, “Elder and youth program funding [should] be provided to community rather than through applications, so Community Wellness can have programs throughout [the] year without having to worry about funding.” This approach, she believes, would ensure uninterrupted services and better support for vulnerable residents.
In addition to program funding, Quassa highlighted the need for investment in community spaces designed to support the most vulnerable individuals. She expressed the importance of establishing safe havens, saying, “Safe place/shelter, where people can feel safe when they need a place to go to rather than being outside or going to people’s place and feel they are unwelcomed.” This initiative aims to provide comfort and security for those in need.
Another key aspect of Quassa’s platform focuses on job creation within the hamlet. She aims to address the potential job losses resulting from the relocation of Government of Nunavut positions away from Iglulik. By fostering local employment opportunities, Quassa seeks to strengthen the community’s economic resilience.
Quassa’s opponent, Erasmus Ivvalu, did not respond to inquiries from Nunavut News regarding his stance on these issues.
Residents of Aggu will have the opportunity to cast their votes in the upcoming elections. Advance polling will occur from October 13 to 23 at the M&R Centre from noon to 19:00. On October 27, voters can participate at the Community Hall from 09:00 to 19:00.
As the election approaches, Quassa’s proposals underscore the pressing need for community-focused strategies to enhance the quality of life in Iglulik.
