Alberta Inquiry Set to Unveil Findings on Care Worker’s Death

A fatality inquiry report will be released on Thursday regarding the death of a Calgary care worker, Deborah Onwu, who was tragically killed while on duty. Onwu, employed at Wood’s Homes, a mental health center serving children, youth, adults, and families in southwest Calgary, was fatally stabbed by her 18-year-old client, Brandon Newman, in 2019. This inquiry aims to shed light on the circumstances surrounding her death and the safety protocols in place for care workers.
Newman, who had a documented history of violence, was known to require two-on-one care due to his complex health needs. At the time of the incident, another staff member was present at the facility but was occupied with a different client on another floor. Following the stabbing, Newman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a sentence of 14 years in prison.
Call for Improved Safety Standards
In the wake of Onwu’s death, there has been a significant outcry from her family, friends, and colleagues, all advocating for enhanced safety measures within the workplace. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), to which Onwu belonged, initiated the inquiry to address concerns about the safety of care workers. CUPE representatives have emphasized the need for systemic changes to ensure the protection of staff in similar environments.
The findings of the inquiry are expected to provide critical insights into the safety protocols currently in place and whether they are adequate to protect care workers from potential harm. CUPE plans to respond to the report’s conclusions at noon on Thursday, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing discussion about workplace safety in the care sector.
This inquiry not only seeks justice for Onwu but also aims to prevent future tragedies by advocating for better policies and practices that prioritize the safety of those who care for vulnerable populations.
