Algonquin College’s Pembroke Campus has recognized Marcie Lane as the recipient of the Brian Fraser Recent Graduate Award during the annual Alumni of Distinction Awards. This honor acknowledges her remarkable journey from military service to social service, illustrating the profound impact of education and community.

A Journey of Resilience and Purpose

More than two decades ago, Lane began her academic career by enrolling in the Police Foundations program at Algonquin College. Her education paved the way for a distinguished career in the Canadian Armed Forces, where she served as a military photojournalist. In this role, she documented stories of courage and sacrifice, capturing pivotal moments from deployment zones to training fields.

Despite her achievements, Lane faced a significant personal challenge when diagnosed with stage-three breast cancer. This diagnosis marked a turning point in her life, forcing her to confront a new battle that tested her strength and resilience.

After successfully overcoming her illness, Lane returned to Algonquin College, enrolling in the Social Service Worker program at the Pembroke Campus. With a renewed sense of purpose, she sought to translate her personal experiences into professional service. “These people are the experts in their own lives,” Lane emphasizes about her clients. “We can’t rely on assumptions or stereotypes.”

Empowering Veterans and Their Families

Currently, Lane serves as the engagement lead with the Canadian Armed Forces Transition Group. In this capacity, she assists veterans and their families in navigating the often complex transition from military life to civilian life. Lane is also advancing her education by pursuing a post-graduate certificate in Addictions and Mental Health, driven by her belief in the importance of informed, compassionate support.

Lane’s story resonates with many, reflecting the essence of perseverance, humility, and community care that characterizes the Ottawa Valley. For the Pembroke Campus, her recognition embodies more than just a personal achievement. It serves as a reminder of the impact that graduates can make when they apply their learning in meaningful ways.

Graduates from Algonquin College are not merely finding jobs; they are becoming catalysts for change in their communities. They work as nurses, educators, entrepreneurs, and advocates, contributing to the social and economic fabric of their regions.

Lane’s experience also highlights the value of lifelong learning. Education often takes various forms—sometimes it is a second chance or a career pivot. Her return to Algonquin after years of military service illustrates how determination can meet opportunity, and how a supportive campus environment can rejuvenate a sense of purpose.

As Algonquin College celebrates Marcie Lane as this year’s Alumna of Distinction, it honors all graduates who leverage their education to uplift others. These narratives underscore the importance of education, not just for individual success, but for the collective strength of communities.

Lane’s inspiring journey is just one of many. Algonquin College encourages alumni from the Pembroke Campus to share their own stories to continue fostering this spirit of community and resilience.
