Clifton Central secured an impressive victory against reigning Vermilion Valley Conference champions Bismark-Henning, winning the season opener 34-13. This marked the Comets’ first victory over the Blue Devils in conference history, setting a promising tone for the season ahead.

The game kicked off dramatically with Clifton Central’s Bryce Denault returning the opening kickoff for an 80-yard touchdown. This electrifying start was followed by another special teams highlight when Owen Palmateer recovered a bad snap from a Blue Devil punt, scoring a touchdown in the end zone. On the ground, Everett Bailey rushed for 27 yards and added a touchdown on four carries, while Blake Chandler contributed with a 2-yard rushing touchdown. Quarterback Brady Shule completed 7 of 11 passes for 65 yards, including a touchdown pass to Derek Meier.

Coal City, Peotone, and Other Highlights

In another standout match, Coal City dominated Pontiac with a 40-14 victory. Logan Natyshok was a key player, amassing 103 rushing yards and scoring two touchdowns. Kole Carpenter also made an impact with 48 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Connor Henline completed 5 of 13 passes for 118 yards, throwing touchdown passes to both Aiden Scrogham and Gavin Berger. Defensively, Brock Finch and Carter Gill each made an interception.

Peotone recorded a decisive 48-7 win against Granite City, showcasing a robust defensive effort that forced five turnovers. Tommy Raschke led the defense with two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. Offensively, Tucker Cain excelled with three rushing touchdowns, while Eli Chenoweth added two scores.

The match between Iroquois West and Hoopeston was tightly contested, ending with Iroquois West on top 21-20. This victory ended an 11-game losing streak for the Raiders, who capitalized on four interceptions, including a pick-six from Aayden Miller.

Close Calls and Big Wins

Herscher edged past Canton in a thrilling encounter, winning 42-38. Reed Laird shone with 150 receiving yards and a touchdown. Multiple players, including Jaxon Suckley and Mason Roberts, contributed to the scoreboard, while Connor Buckley ensured all extra points were converted.

Manteno delivered a commanding performance against Sandwich, scoring 54 points for the second consecutive season opener, highlighting their offensive prowess.

The game between Oakwood and Momence was a nail-biter that went into double overtime, with Oakwood ultimately triumphing 27-26. After a missed extra point attempt in the first overtime, Oakwood secured the win with a touchdown and a successful extra point, leaving Momence heartbroken despite strong performances from senior quarterback Erick Castillo and receiver Eddie Ferreira.

El Paso-Gridley defeated Reed-Custer 28-14, with Jesse Tresouthick completing 10 of 12 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, Georgetown-Ridge Farm struggled against Watseka, falling 22-13 despite nearly 200 rushing yards, led by Dennis Goodman.
