Community Outrage After Dog Abandoned in Trash at Transfer Station
A dog was discovered abandoned in a trash bag at the Lone Butte Transfer Station in South Cariboo on November 27, 2023, leading to widespread outrage in the community. The incident occurred around 09:15 when local resident Cory Forsyth heard faint cries while dropping off his waste. Initially dismissing the sounds as the noise of the gate, he became concerned after hearing them again and decided to investigate.
Forsyth, accompanied by an attendant from the transfer station, retrieved a picker pole to search through the garbage. Their efforts soon revealed a bag exhibiting movement, which they initially thought contained a cat. Upon opening the bag, they were shocked to find a small, elderly, and emaciated dog inside. “I felt really sad for the little animal. He was obviously still alive and could still be saved,” Forsyth recounted.
Upon examination, it was evident that the dog had been neglected and potentially starved. Forsyth described the animal as barely able to stand, prompting him to fetch a box and a bowl for water. After ensuring the dog was safe, he left the transfer station, having learned that the staff would provide care for the animal. Despite his departure for a dental appointment, Forsyth expressed ongoing feelings of shock and disgust over the situation.
“I was disgusted. I can’t believe somebody would take a live animal and throw it away like that,” he stated. Forsyth aimed to raise awareness about the incident through social media, posting photos of the dog and sharing his experience on Facebook, which resonated strongly with the local community.
While the public response was one of anger, Forsyth urged compassion for the individual responsible for the abandonment. He emphasized that, regardless of circumstances, there are organizations and people willing to assist those struggling to care for pets. “If you can’t look after your pet, there are people and organizations that will help. That’s how it should have been handled rather than being disposed of like it’s not alive,” he said.
As the community rallies around the cause, Forsyth remains hopeful for the dog’s recovery. He believes that without immediate intervention, the animal may not have survived the night. At present, the condition of the dog remains uncertain, and the 100 Mile Free Press has reached out to the B.C. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for further information on the situation. Updates will be provided as more details emerge.
