Elvis Stojko Races to New Heights at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

Elvis Stojko, the three-time World Champion and two-time Olympic silver medalist in figure skating, has taken to the racetrack, showcasing his competitive spirit in a new arena. On September 20 and 21, 2023, at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Stojko will compete in the Formula Prototype Challenge, demonstrating his passion for racing that rivals his dedication to ice skating.
Stepping onto the pit lane, Stojko found himself in the midst of a bustling environment. The heat of the day enveloped him, but his focus remained unwavering. His striking purple and neon yellow Revolution race car stood out, capturing attention among the thrumming engines and excited spectators. “It’s an open track day,” he explained during a break, with his helmet under his arm. “I’m testing setups for the season. We’re lucky this track is just a few minutes from my home. It feels like it’s meant to be.”
Stojko’s commitment to racing is far more than a casual interest. “I don’t do things for hobbies. Video games are hobbies. This, for me, is passion. I’ve been a competitor my whole life, and this fills my soul,” he stated emphatically. However, pursuing this passion comes with significant financial demands. Stojko acknowledged that he has invested heavily in his racing career, even re-mortgaging part of his home to fund his participation in the sport. “Racing is expensive. It’s the reality. But I believe in this so much that I was willing to do whatever it took,” he added.
Stojko’s journey into racing gained momentum through a chance encounter with Steffen Rilli of Rilli Racing. “We had a conversation about skills and driving, and he thought I could handle myself,” Stojko recalled. Following a swift adaptation to the car during his first test, he quickly found himself competing at the renowned Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. Despite being unfamiliar with the track and the vehicle, Stojko’s determination led him to the podium, where he set the fastest lap. “All the training, the visualization, the discipline I learned from skating, that gave me an advantage,” he remarked.
As Stojko aims for higher levels of competition, he recognizes the importance of securing partnerships and sponsorships. “Getting to the next level, which is the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA), takes backing,” he explained. “It’s about a former Olympic athlete applying the same mindset, the same drive, to a whole new arena. I know I can do this. People are starting to see it.”
IMSA oversees various sports car racing series in North America, and success in this arena requires not only talent but also significant financial support. Stojko emphasized the need for partnerships with Canadian brands that wish to be part of his journey. “It’s not just about winning; it’s about the story of an athlete taking everything he’s learned in one sport and applying it to another,” he stated.
Stojko’s philosophy mirrors his approach to figure skating. He believes in consistent preparation, regardless of one’s emotional state. “Everyone wants to win, but not everyone is willing to do the preparation to win,” he said. “For me, being on the track is like meditation.” His dedication has not gone unnoticed; Revolution Racing appointed him as their official ambassador in Canada, which further opens doors for his racing aspirations.
As the race weekend approaches, Stojko’s excitement is palpable. He will have practice sessions open for fans to witness his skill firsthand. Following the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park event, he is set to compete at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, in November, where he will continue to prove himself on one of North America’s premier tracks.
With the roar of his Revolution car echoing across the track, Stojko is not merely racing; he is demonstrating the power of passion and perseverance. The sacrifices he has made, both financially and personally, converge into a singular truth: Elvis Stojko is fully committed to this new chapter in his athletic career, ready to leave his mark once again.
