Family of Ottawa Mass Stabbing Victims Appeals for Immigration Aid
The family of an Ottawa man whose wife and four children were tragically killed in a mass stabbing last year is urgently seeking assistance from the Canadian government regarding their immigration status. This request comes as they navigate significant challenges following the horrific events that unfolded in March 2024.
In a devastating incident, Febrio De-Zoysa pleaded guilty to the murders of Darshani Ekanayake, her four children—including a two-month-old infant—and family friend Gamini Amarakoon. The attack took place in an Ottawa townhouse, leaving the children’s father, Dhanushka Wickramasinghe, injured but alive. Since then, Dhanushka has been working to secure permanent residency in Canada on compassionate grounds, a process that has faced delays.
Dhanushka’s application for permanent residency was approved in principle almost a year ago, yet he has not received any updates on its progress. His brother and father, who traveled from overseas to support him after the tragedy, have similarly encountered stagnation in their applications for permanent residency. The family is now calling on the immigration department to expedite their requests.
In addition, Dhanushka’s brother is seeking an extension to his temporary resident permit, which would allow him to work in Canada. He has also voiced concerns about the government’s decision to deny visitor visas for his wife and daughter, which would have enabled them to visit during this difficult time.
As the family continues to grapple with the aftermath of this tragedy, their situation highlights the complexities involved in immigration processes, particularly for those affected by violent crimes. The emotional toll of the mass stabbing incident remains profound, as the family seeks to rebuild their lives amid uncertainty.
