Former NHL Star Mel Bridgman Passes Away at 70
Former NHL player and Ottawa Senators general manager Mel Bridgman has passed away at the age of 70. The NHL Alumni Association announced his death on November 8, 2025. The cause of his death has not been disclosed to the public.
Bridgman, a native of Trenton, Ontario, was selected as the first overall pick in the 1975 NHL Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers. He spent his initial six-plus seasons with the Flyers, contributing significantly to the team’s performance during that era. His career took a notable turn when he was traded to the Calgary Flames in the 1981-82 season, where he achieved a career-high of 33 goals and 54 assists over 72 games.
Following his successful stint in Calgary, Bridgman joined the New Jersey Devils in the 1983-84 season, playing for three-plus years before moving to the Detroit Red Wings during the 1986-87 season. He concluded his playing career with the Vancouver Canucks in 1988-89. Over the course of his career, Bridgman accumulated a total of 701 points, comprising 252 goals and 449 assists across 977 regular-season games.
Legacy in Hockey Management
In 1991, Bridgman transitioned from player to management, becoming the first general manager of the newly established Ottawa Senators. He held the position until 1993, during which he played a pivotal role in shaping the team’s early identity and direction in the NHL.
Bridgman’s impact on the game extended beyond his statistics; he was known for his leadership and dedication to hockey. His contributions to the sport will be remembered by fans and players alike.
