Options Community Services is set to host a unique event on October 5, 2023, combining high tea, fashion, and entertainment to support the development of affordable housing in the South Fraser Valley. Following the successful completion of the Habitat @81st, a 100-unit mixed income apartment project in Newton, the organization is now focused on a new initiative in north Surrey.

With over 600 staff and more than 50 years of service, Options Community Services provides crucial support to the community, including employment assistance and programs for newcomers and women escaping violence. Recognizing the increasing challenge of finding safe and affordable housing, the organization has prioritized housing as a key focus area, with plans for a project that will include 70 units of two- and three-bedroom affordable family housing.

According to Ginny Hasselfield, Options’ Director of Development, “The need is acute – our clients have told us this is their No. 1 issue, so we’re answering that need.” She emphasized that non-profits often lack the financial resources and expertise for such building projects, noting that pre-development costs can reach around $500,000.

High Tea & High Fashion: A Fundraising Event

The upcoming High Tea & High Fashion event promises to be both entertaining and impactful. Guests will enjoy a delightful afternoon featuring high-tea-inspired treats, a live auction, and a fusion fashion show that highlights both South Asian and Western styles. The event will take place at the Empress Palace Ballroom in Surrey.

Co-hosted by Nira Arora and auctioneer Howard Blank, the event invites attendees to “don your fascinators and fancy outfits” for a memorable experience. The festivities will begin with a champagne reception from 13:00 to 14:00, followed by high tea service and a fashion showcase featuring the work of designer Sandeep Chohan. Chohan’s brand, Art of Thread, is known for its handcrafted garments that fuse traditional Indian craftsmanship with contemporary design.

Adding to the entertainment will be Randy Charach, a mentalist and comedian renowned for his engaging performances. His shows have garnered praise from various media outlets, including the New York Times, which described his acts as “jaw-dropping entertainment.” The afternoon will conclude with a presentation by Davi Bains-Gill, who creates exquisite custom gowns and couture attire.

Tickets for this unique event are priced at $150 each, or $1,200 for a table of eight. Attendees are encouraged to purchase tickets or make donations via the event’s website, highfashionandhightea.ca.

Community Involvement and Sponsorship

Community engagement is vital to the success of the High Tea & High Fashion event. Hasselfield expressed gratitude to current sponsors, including Schmunk, Gatt, Smith & Associates, the Surrey Now-Leader, and the Surrey Board of Trade. Additional sponsors are welcomed to join the effort to support affordable housing initiatives.

For those interested in contributing or learning more about the event, Hasselfield can be contacted directly at 604-813-6409. By participating in events like this, community members can make a significant impact on the lives of families in need of safe and affordable housing.
