Justin Pace Returns for Queen’s Gaels in Playoff Showdown
The Queen’s University Gaels will welcome back linebacker Justin Pace for their pivotal first-round playoff game against McMaster on Saturday at Richardson Stadium. Pace, a notable All-Canadian selection last season, had been sidelined following an ejection during the Gaels’ commanding 58-18 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on September 20, 2023.
The incident occurred just before halftime when Pace made a hit on Warriors quarterback Nick Orr. Following the game, the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) did not disclose the length of Pace’s suspension, leaving uncertainty surrounding his status. Until recently, OUA representatives indicated that Pace’s case was “under review.”
In a statement released this week, the OUA confirmed that the Gaels had appealed the suspension, which led to a ruling that Pace would be suspended for the remainder of the OUA football regular season, as outlined by OUA policies. “The suspension is now completed, so Justin will be returning to play this weekend,” stated Steve Snyder, head coach of the Gaels, during his weekly press conference on Thursday.
Pace’s absence was felt keenly by the team, as he was the leading tackler prior to his suspension. He missed three regular-season games during this time: the Gaels’ 57-5 rout of York on September 27, their 27-17 win against Guelph, and a season-ending 31-28 loss at home to Windsor.
The return of Pace adds a significant boost to Queen’s defensive line as they prepare to face McMaster in a highly anticipated matchup. The Gaels will look to leverage Pace’s skills and experience as they aim for victory in the playoffs.
