Kevin Lankinen Sets NHL Record with Perfect Shootout Performance
The Vancouver Canucks’ goalie Kevin Lankinen has made headlines this season by achieving a remarkable feat in the NHL. Lankinen, a Finnish netminder, has proven himself a standout performer in shootouts, helping his team secure two victories this season, both decided through this thrilling method. His latest success came on October 26, 2023, when he delivered a flawless performance against the St. Louis Blues, solidifying his place in the NHL record books.
Lankinen’s exceptional skills in shootouts have not gone unnoticed. He has stopped all seven shots faced this season, which has earned him the highest shootout save percentage in NHL history for goalies who have played a minimum of ten games. Over the course of his NHL career, he has successfully blocked 38 of 44 shootout attempts, showcasing his consistency and skill under pressure.
“He’s a guy who always wants shootouts,” said teammate Jake DeBrusk following the Canucks’ victory over St. Louis. DeBrusk emphasized Lankinen’s dedication to practice, which has contributed to his remarkable success in these high-stakes situations.
Canucks’ Goalies Excel in High-Pressure Situations
Lankinen is not the only goalie for the Canucks who has thrived in shootouts. Former Canucks netminder Eddie Lack ranks fifth all-time in shootout save percentage, while current goaltender Thatcher Demko is statistically one of the best active goaltenders in this scenario. “Lanks is a true pro, and so is Demmer,” said Adam Foote after the team’s latest win. “They study the shooters, they study the game. It’s no fluke that he did what he did tonight.”
This season, the Canucks, alongside the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers, are among the few NHL teams with more than one shootout win. Notably, Samuel Ersson of the Flyers and Linus Ullmark of the Senators are also recognized as top shootout goalies in the league. The Canucks’ five shootout victories from last season are tied for the fifth-most in the NHL, highlighting their effectiveness in this pressure-filled aspect of the game.
Despite facing challenges in other areas, such as a middling record and issues with goal-scoring, the Canucks have found a competitive edge in shootouts. As the season progresses, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if Lankinen can maintain his perfect shootout record and continue to lead his team in these crucial moments.
