Owners of a Kitchener restaurant expressed their gratitude after a fire incident was swiftly contained, resulting in minimal damage and a rapid arrest. Hima and Samrat Patel, who operate The Biryani Barrel on King Street East, received an urgent call early on the morning of December 10, 2023, informing them of a fire at their establishment.

Hima described the harrowing moment when her husband rushed to her in a panic, explaining that their patio was ablaze. Speaking on The Mike Farwell Show, she revealed the unfortunate circumstances that led to the fire: a man attempted to break into the restaurant but, failing to do so, set a nearby planter on fire. “It could have been so much worse,” Hima remarked, reflecting on the incident.

Fortunately, a bystander quickly noticed the flames and reported the fire to the authorities. The quick response from the local police and firefighters played a crucial role in limiting the damage. Hima stated that the fire was contained to a small area of the patio, allowing the restaurant to remain open for business.

Waterloo Regional Police confirmed that no injuries occurred due to the fire. A 39-year-old man from Kitchener has been charged with three counts of arson and one count of possession of incendiary materials. The situation could have escalated significantly if not for the timely intervention of the community member who alerted the authorities.

The Patel family has received overwhelming support from the local community during this challenging time. Hima emphasized their determination to keep moving forward, stating, “With so much passion, time, energy, and investment— a small fire won’t break us. The show must go on.”

Hima and Samrat are also eager to connect with the Good Samaritan who reported the fire. “If you’re listening, please reach out to us; we would love to thank you in person,” Hima said, underscoring the importance of community in overcoming adversity.

As the couple reflects on the incident, they remain focused on their business and the support from patrons. The Biryani Barrel continues to operate, embodying resilience in the face of unexpected challenges.
