Leylah Fernandez Eliminated by Elena Rybakina at Pan Pacific Open
In a tightly contested match at the Toray Pan Pacific Open on October 22, 2025, Canada’s Leylah Fernandez was defeated by Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, the tournament’s second seed. Rybakina secured her place in the quarterfinals with a straight-sets victory, winning 6-4, 6-3.
Fernandez, ranked outside the top 30, faced a formidable opponent in Rybakina, who is currently the world No. 7. The match lasted one hour and 28 minutes, during which Rybakina maintained control, never trailing on the scoreboard and dropping serve only once. This victory sets Rybakina up for a clash against Victoria Mboko, a young Canadian player who previously upset Rybakina during the semifinals of the National Bank Open in Montreal.
Recent Success for Fernandez and Canadian Tennis
Prior to this match, Leylah Fernandez had experienced a significant boost in her career, having recently won the Japan Open in Osaka. This victory marked her fifth career singles title and showcased her talent on the international stage. The 23-year-old from Laval, Quebec, was looking to build on her momentum but found herself outmatched against Rybakina.
Meanwhile, in the doubles competition, fellow Canadians Bianca Andreescu and Victoria Mboko faced a challenging quarterfinal match against Spain’s Christina Bucsa and Japan’s Shuko Aoyama. The Canadians fought hard but ultimately fell short, losing 6-4, 7-6 (3), 10-8 after a lengthy battle on the hardcourt.
The Pan Pacific Open continues to be a significant event on the women’s tennis calendar, attracting top talent from around the world. As the tournament progresses, fans and players alike will be watching closely to see how the remaining competitors perform.
