Montreal Exterminators Experience Surge in Wasp Nest Calls

As summer draws to a close, Montreal exterminators are witnessing a significant rise in wasp-related service calls. Exterminator Sasha Thinel, owner of Extermination Solution Extreme, reports a notable increase in requests for assistance with bald-faced hornets. Thinel indicates that it is not unusual for him to encounter up to 50 wasp nests in a single neighborhood during this peak season, compared to the typical one or two.

Wasps are known for their large paper nests and rapidly expanding colonies. Thinel explains the dangers they pose, stating that an unattended nest can become a serious threat due to the aggressive nature of wasps, which can sting multiple times. The extermination process involves injecting chemicals into the nests, a procedure that can take several days to complete, especially for those hidden within the walls of homes.

Understanding the Wasp Population Boom

A rise in wasp sightings may not solely reflect an actual increase in their population. Nathalie Jreidini, the director of education at Ecomuseum Zoo, provides insight into the factors contributing to this perception. She highlights that warm weather accelerates the wasps’ life cycle, allowing for faster colony growth. Additionally, the prevalence of food waste attracts wasps, enabling them to feed themselves and their larvae, which further enlarges their colonies.

Despite their reputation, Jreidini emphasizes the ecological benefits of coexisting with wasps. Certain species, including hornets and yellowjackets, help pollinate flowers and control pest populations. She notes, “They will hop from flower to flower moving around pollen. Of course, that’s not the case for all species, but the ones said to rely on nectar.”

Tips for Avoiding Wasps

For those looking to enjoy outdoor activities without attracting wasps, Jreidini offers several practical suggestions. Keeping food in closed containers is essential, as is rinsing bottles before disposal. Food waste should be placed in sealed garbage bins that are cleaned regularly. Additionally, she advises against sudden movements when wasps are nearby, emphasizing the importance of remaining calm.

As the wasp season continues, residents in Montreal should remain vigilant and take proactive measures to minimize encounters while appreciating the ecological role these insects play.
