Moose Jaw Shelter Operator Left Uninformed on Relocation Plans

In Moose Jaw, the operator of a local homeless shelter has expressed frustration over a lack of communication regarding the facility’s potential relocation. Shawn Fraser, CEO of the John Howard Society of Saskatchewan, indicated that he has not received any updates from provincial officials about the future of the Willow Lodge, which currently provides 15 beds for those in need.
Concerns Over Shelter’s Future
Fraser’s comments come after James Murdock, the Mayor of Moose Jaw, announced that the province intends to move the shelter. This decision followed a meeting between the mayor and Premier Scott Moe along with other cabinet ministers, where the relocation was briefly discussed.
Despite the announcement, Murdock admitted he was surprised by the decision and stated that he does not have details on potential new locations for the shelter. The province has directed the city to identify suitable alternatives, but specific plans remain unclear. Fraser noted that he has been trying to keep his staff informed, but the lack of information hampers effective communication.
Provincial Response Pending
As of now, there has been no response from provincial authorities regarding inquiries about the relocation process. The uncertainty surrounding the situation is concerning for both shelter staff and the individuals relying on its services. The Willow Lodge plays a critical role in the community, providing essential support for vulnerable populations.
This report highlights the ongoing challenges faced by organizations working to assist those experiencing homelessness, particularly in light of shifting governmental policies. The situation remains fluid, and stakeholders are eager for clarity on the future of the shelter and its operations.
