NHL Suspends Mitch Love for Entire 2025-26 Season Amid Abuse Claims
The National Hockey League (NHL) has suspended Washington Capitals assistant coach Mitch Love for the entirety of the 2025-26 season following allegations of domestic violence. The decision, announced on October 26, 2025, comes after an investigation initiated by the NHL during the off-season while Love was interviewing for head coaching positions with other clubs.
The details surrounding the allegations were not disclosed initially. However, according to sports journalist Frank Seravalli, the victim reported the claims directly to the NHL and the teams Love spoke with over the summer. The Capitals had placed Love on leave as the investigation progressed, stating they would not comment until it concluded.
Following the suspension, the Capitals confirmed that Love has been relieved of his duties as an assistant coach, effective immediately. The organization emphasized its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of conduct and accountability.
Mitch Love was responsible for overseeing the team’s defensive strategies under head coach Spencer Carbery. Despite Love’s absence due to the investigation, the Capitals currently hold a record of 6-3-0 and sit fourth in the Metropolitan Division. They have also ranked fourth in the NHL for goals against, indicating that Love’s suspension did not impact the team’s defensive performance this season.
With Love’s departure, the Capitals will likely seek to appoint a new assistant coach to fill the void in their defensive lineup. The team’s management is under pressure to enhance their coaching staff while maintaining focus on their current season’s objectives.
In related news from the NHL, the Boston Bruins have placed defenseman Hampus Lindholm on injured reserve due to an injury sustained on October 9, recalling Jonathan Aspirot from their AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins. Aspirot has played five games this season, recording one goal and two assists.
The situation surrounding Mitch Love serves as a reminder of the NHL’s ongoing commitment to addressing issues of conduct and accountability among its personnel. The league has faced scrutiny in the past regarding its handling of sensitive matters, and this suspension aligns with their efforts to ensure a safe and respectful environment within the sport.
