An Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer experienced a harrowing near-miss while investigating a fatal school bus crash that occurred on November 2, 2023. The incident, which took place on Highway 401 in Middlesex County, involved two buses transporting students from Kitchener Collegiate Institute (KCI) to Point Pelee National Park. Tragically, the crash resulted in the death of a school bus driver and injuries to four students.

According to OPP Sergeant Ed Sanchuk, an investigation into the crash was underway when an unidentified driver recklessly sped past police barricades. In a social media update, Sanchuk described the driver’s actions as “shocking and dangerous,” highlighting that they “raced through the closed scene at a high speed, ignoring all warnings.” This dangerous maneuver resulted in the vehicle colliding with police equipment and narrowly missing the officer by mere inches.

Safety Concerns Raised by Police

Sanchuk emphasized the life-threatening nature of the incident, stating, “this was extremely dangerous, where an officer nearly lost their life.” The situation escalated further when a second motorist attempted to breach the closure, striking one of the barriers. These actions prompted Sanchuk to express the critical need for public adherence to road closures, particularly in emergency situations. He stated, “highway closure barriers are not suggestions, they’re lifelines for first responders, and the public.”

The OPP is calling for anyone with information about the reckless driver who nearly struck the officer to come forward. The investigation into the bus crash itself remains ongoing, but there have been no updates regarding further developments related to that incident.

In light of this incident, the OPP is reminding the public of the importance of respecting road closures, particularly in cases where first responders are actively managing dangerous situations. Failure to comply not only jeopardizes the safety of emergency personnel but can also have devastating consequences for those involved in the original incident.

As investigations continue, the OPP aims to ensure the safety of both officers and the public, reinforcing that cooperation during emergencies is essential to prevent further tragedies.
